Star Wars ’77

Like a lot of friends my age, Star Wars was transformative. I remember we were having dinner with my neighbors at a restaurant, and my neighbor asked my dad if we had seen Star Wars yet.
“No,” said my dad.
“You must take Jimmy! It’s full of space stuff, like NASA.”
So, my dad took me. It was summer, and when we left the theater, the world seemed dim somehow. I wanted to get back into that other world where people had laser swords and could move stuff with their minds.
I drew this picture when we got home, trying to capture the film as though it were a fading dream. I need not have worried, however. I saved my lawn mowing money and went to see it every chance I could after that day.

Making comics with Lynda Barry

I had the honor to attend a workshop by Lynda Barry today. I’ve been a fan since reading her strip in the Baltimore City Paper, and I love her books on making comics, and creativity.

I volunteered at the workshop, and had some time to talk and ask questions. Lynda has a fabulous sense of humor, and is generous with her teaching. She shared many anecdotes, and demonstrated just how effective her approach is as she ran us through exercise after exercise.

I’m not going to recount the entire day here, but I will say that talking with her sharpened one of my ideas about imagination, and I have a new insight into the practical value of art (even my modest art).

Below are some pics to took throughout the day.

Everyone that I interacted with seemed to leave feeling inspired and a little lighter in their spirit.

Decommissioned Prose

A few months ago, I stated my intention to draw every day during 2025. How is it going? Really well! I don’t feel compelled to share much here other than it has been very rewarding. Drawing is one of my favorite things, and I’ve found that by doing it more frequently, I feel sharper and more comfortable with it. It’s more second nature, and this challenge is not a chore. Very satisfying.

I’ve also been working on a project concerning Asemic texts. Asemic writing is a wordless open semantic form of writing. The word asemic means “having no specific semantic content”, or “without the smallest unit of meaning”. It can be gestural, and often is.

I have been cutting up certain materials to reassemble them in new ways. It’s not exactly Asemic writing, but several expository efforts have made their way into my sketchbooks over/alongside my drawings. These feel connected to the Asemic project. I like them, and have, in turn, had a robot read them aloud for me. I then recorded these orations and added them to some of my instrumental RPM tracks, which ties several projects together this month.

I will likely make completely posts for each “writing,” but for now, I’ll share these WIPS as a sign of my enjoyment in these tasks.

I’m getting into assembling these! I’ll clean them up and share them more fully later.
