6 Years

I hit 6 years today. And, unrelatedly, one of my sponsees brought be a present from a pilgrimage to the AA Akron Intergroup.

During this past year, I noticed that I’ve had a spiritual awakening. It’s wasn’t like being struck by lightning, as some folks claim to experience. It’s more of a quiet shift. Like waking up slowly.

I’ve spent a great deal of time examining self worth, and continuing to engage in recovery. I’ve come to a deeper understanding of forgiveness.

Six years ago, I just wanted to stop drinking and stop having horrendous hangovers. I had no idea the rewards that were ahead of me as the result of thoroughly following this path.

5 Years

Today makes five years since I gave up alcohol. I feel really good. I’m sleeping well, eating well (I’ve shed the extra pandemic weight), doing my Tai Chi every day, and I am happy.

My last stretch of sobriety, previous to this bout, lasted 20 years. They were good years, and I did a lot of work on myself. But I didn’t have a formal program of recovery to follow, and these past five years have been profound and deep. I am very grateful.

Here are some pics from this weekend, including anchovies, and a cute pic of Goose.

I’ve been saving this post to tell my story (such as it is).

But, for now, I think I’ll say that I prefer being sober. I’m grateful for this life, and the presence of mind to enjoy it.
